An attempt was made on the President of Madagascar, Andri Radzuelina, Radio France International (RFI) reports, citing the prosecutor.
He did not give details of the attempt, including when it was committed, but said that two people were arrested as part of the investigation. According to the prosecutor, they are French-Malagasy Paul Rafanoharana and Frenchman Philippe Francois. They planned the murder of “major political figures”, including the president, according to RFI. They are charged with creating a threat to the national security of Madagascar.
According to the radio station, both detainees are graduates of the French Special Military School Saint-Cyr. Francois headed the investment fund, Rafanoharana was an adviser to the Archbishop of Antananarivo.
RFI, citing a source, claims that Rafanoharan was detained on Tuesday evening at his home, Francois & mdash; in the departure hall of the Antananarivo Ivato Airport, when he was about to fly to France.
Reuters, citing the Prosecutor General, also reports that several people were detained on suspicion of organizing an attempt on the president, among whom were both citizens of Madagascar and foreigners.
In 2011, an attempt was already made on Radzuelina. Then an explosive device went off under the car of the head of the republic during the movement of his motorcade. The car was well protected and the head of state was not injured.
Radzuelina served as mayor of Antananarivo in the late 2000s, then was president of the Supreme Transitional Administration, actually leading the country, but having limited rights as president of Madagascar. He has been fully holding the position since 2019.
